Linking assets

Linking an asset adds a new location for the linked asset. Once linked, the asset — and all its dependants — are present in both the original location and the linked-to location.

Linking an asset makes the asset and its dependent assets available in another location in your system with the same asset ID.

Linked assets are useful if you want an asset to appear in many different locations on your site.

For example, to have a "Contact Us" page appear under both the "Home" and "About Us" pages, place the "Contact Us" page under the "Home" page and link it under the "About Us" page.

linking is not duplicating. For example, when a linked asset is edited, it does not matter if the edit is initiated at the original location or at a linked-to location: the changes to the asset present at all locations.
You must have write permissions on the asset to use the linking feature.
  1. Drag and drop one or more assets into the location to which you want to link them.

Dropping an asset directly onto a parent asset and selecting Link here clones the asset under this parent asset as a child, for example, linking a standard page asset under a site asset.
  2. Select Link here.

  3. On the HIPO screen, select Next to finish linking the assets.

While linked assets are connected, the Link type is adjustable for each linked asset. Adjustable link types let you control how linked assets display on your frontend.

For example, the "Contact Us" page under your "Home" page could be a Menu link asset, and the Contact Us page under the About Us page could be a Hidden link asset.

Read the Linking assets conceptual documentation for more information about menu and hidden links and the other link types available in Matrix.

Deleting linked assets

Deleting a linked asset does not delete other linked assets. To delete all linked assets, use the Delete link fields on the Asset linking screen of an asset.
