Configure the landing page

This section of the guide explains how to configure a landing page. In other words, we are describing the 'what' and 'how' of the changes you can make to the layout and formatting of your page. This is so that you can tailor your page to suit your communication purposes.

You can make changes to the following layout/formatting aspects of your landing page.

Page width (mandatory)

Overview

Content authors must apply a full width layout to a landing pages prior to editing any content or configuring any other aspect of the page.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the landing page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Layout section, navigate to the Main page layout type metadata field.

  5. Edit the Main page layout type metadata field as follows:

    1. Un-tick 'Use default'.

    2. Select 'Full width landing page' from the available options.

  6. Save the change.

Overview

Breadcrumbs are a list of clickable links showing the path taken to the location of the current page. Colleagues viewing your page can use these breadcrumb links to navigate back through the path leading to the page. Navigating this way may help them discover other useful content.

Content authors are able to switch breadcrumbs on and off as desired.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Layout section, navigate to the Show breadcrumbs? metadata field.

  5. Edit the Show breadcrumbs? metadata field as follows:

    • Breadcrumbs switched on: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

    • Breadcrumbs switched off: un-tick 'Use default' and select 'No'.

  6. Save the change.

Summary text

Overview

The page summary text of a landing page sits and the top of the page, beneath the page heading. Along with the page heading, it tells the user what the page is about.

Content authors are able to switch page summary text on and off as desired.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the landing page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Content section, navigate to the Page summary metadata field.

  5. Edit the Page summary metadata field as follows:

    • Page summary switched off: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

    • Page summary switched on: un-tick 'Use default' and enter in summary text (try to keep it concise—around 330 characters is more than enough!).

  6. Save the change.

Author block

Overview

The Author block of a page contains:

  • the user avatar and name of the person that created the page

  • the date the page was created on

  • a favourite button (allowing users to 'favourite' the page)

  • an Edit button (allowing user to click through to the Edit+ interface to edit the page).

Content authors are able to switch the author block on and off as desired. It is important to note that switching off the author block will hide all of the above information/features.

We recommend that you keep the author block switched off for landing pages. You will need to switch the author block off, as it will display by default.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Layout section, navigate to the Show author block? metadata field.

  5. Edit the Show author block? metadata field as follows:

    • Author block switched off: un-tick 'Use default' and select 'No'.

    • Author block switched on: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

  6. Save the change.

Overview

Banner images are designed to visually support the content of a landing page. They cue your readers into the general theme of the landing page and its sub-pages.

We recommend that you keep the banner image switched on for landing pages. You will need to add a banner image, as none will display by default.

Procedure

Upload image

  • Upload the image to the appropriate location in the asset tree:

    • [Site name] Media (site asset) > Banners (folder) > …

    • Please note: images for banner images need to be 1800px wide by 250px tall.

  • When first creating the image asset, ensure that you complete the Alt and Caption fields. Alt text and Caption text can be updated on the Details screen of the image.

Select your banner image

  1. Navigate to the page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Layout section, navigate to the Landing page banner metadata field.

  5. Edit the Landing page banner metadata field as follows:

    • Banner image switched on: un-tick 'Use default' and select the image uploaded previously.

    • Banner image switched off: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

  6. Save the change.

Last updated by section

Overview

The last updated by section of a page shows:

  • the user avatar and name of the person that last updated the page

  • the date the page was updated.

Content authors are able to switch the last updated by section on and off as desired.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Layout section, navigate to the Show who last updated this page? metadata field.

  5. Edit the Show who last updated this page? metadata field as follows:

    • Last updated by switched on: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

    • Last updated by switched off: un-tick 'Use default' and select 'No'.

  6. Save the change.

Comments

Overview

The comments section of a page allows users to comment on the content of your page (if you let them…). You might want feedback on your content or it might be a set of non-negotiable content that doesn’t warrant inviting comment.

Content authors are able to switch the comments section on and off as desired.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Layout section, navigate to the Show comments? metadata field.

  5. Edit the Show comments? metadata field as follows:

    • Comments switched on: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

    • Comments switched off: un-tick 'Use default' and select 'No'.

  6. Save the change.

Overview

The back to top link is exactly what it sounds like—a link for user to click on, that takes them back to the top of the page.

Content authors are able to switch the back to top link section on and off as desired.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Layout section, navigate to the Show back to top link? metadata field.

  5. Edit the Show back to top link? metadata field as follows:

    • Back to top link switched on: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

    • Back to top link switched off: un-tick 'Use default' and select 'No'.

  6. Save the change.

Recently updated section

Overview

The Recently updated aside listing is specifically used for landing pages.

As it’s name indicates, the Recently updated aside listing displays any sub-pages (Squiz Workplace assets) that have been recently updated. Please note: the sub-pages listed will include only those that sit under the landing page in the Information Architecture (IA) of your Squiz Workplace.

Content authors are able to switch the Recently updated aside listing on and off as desired.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Content section, navigate to the Aside assets metadata field.

  5. Edit the Aside assets metadata field as follows:

    • Recently updated aside listing switched on:

      1. un-tick 'Use default'

      2. select 'Recently updated' aside asset located within the following file path: Squiz Workplace Mk [X] (folder asset) > Includes (folder asset) > Asides (folder asset) > Recently updated (standard page asset).

      3. Please note: you can rearrange the order of these aside assets (Recently viewed and Recently updated) by dragging and dropping them into the correct order (up/down arrows button).

    • Recently updated aside listing switched off: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

  6. Save the change.

Recently viewed section

Overview

The Recently viewed aside listing is specifically used for landing pages.

As it’s name indicates, the Recently viewed aside listing displays any sub-pages (Squiz Workplace assets) that have been recently viewed. Please note: the sub-pages listed will include only those that sit under the landing page in the Information Architecture (IA) of your Squiz Workplace.

Content authors are able to switch the Recently viewed aside listing on and off as desired.

Procedure

  1. Navigate to the page.

  2. Click the 'Edit' button (Screenshot of Squiz Workplace edit button) or add '/_edit' to the URL of the page. This will open up the Edit+ Interface.

  3. Enter the Metadata screen.

  4. Within the Page Content section, navigate to the Aside assets metadata field.

  5. Edit the Aside assets metadata field as follows:

    • Recently viewed aside listing switched on:

      1. un-tick 'Use default'

      2. select 'Recently viewed' aside asset located within the following file path: Squiz Workplace Mk [X] (folder asset) > Includes (folder asset) > Asides (folder asset) > Recently updated (standard page asset).

      3. Please note: you can rearrange the order of these aside assets (Recently viewed and Recently updated) by dragging and dropping them into the correct order (Edit+ 'Drag and drop' button).

    • Recently viewed aside listing switched off: keep 'Use default' tick box checked.

  6. Save the change.
