Upgrade engagement analytics to Google Analytics 4

Google announced that its next-generation analytics platform, Google Analytics 4 (GA4), will replace the Universal Analytics (UA) properties on July 1, 2023.

After this date, Google will stop supporting the existing UA properties, and no further information will be passed through the property. If your Workplace instance is configured with UA properties, these properties must be transitioned to the new GA4 platform.

Before you start

  • You have previously followed all steps in Engagement analytics to set up a UA integration for your Workplace instance.

  • You must be on Workplace v3.8.5.0 or higher to transition to GA4.

If you are unable to upgrade to this version, you can ask your solution owner to request this patch to be applied to your Workplace instance.
  • The person performing these steps must be a GA Resource Administrator

Steps

Activate GA4 API

Workplace analytics reporting relies on the Google Analytics Data API.

These steps will either help you validate the current API status or activate the API.

To activate the API for your GA project:

  1. Load the Google Cloud API Library

  2. Select Select a project and choose the associated project for your Workplace instance.

  3. Use the search box to filter results for "Google Analytics Data API".

  4. Select ENABLE if the API is not already active.

You have validated that your project now has API support configured.

Convert your UA property to a GA4 property

GA may have already transitioned your UA property to GA4. If correct, you can skip this step. Skip this step and continue to Create custom dimensions.

To convert your UA property:

  1. Load the Google Analytics dashboard and sign in with the appropriate Google account credentials.

  2. Select the Workplace analytics project from the menu.

  3. Select system configuration to open the Admin options.

  4. Select GA4 Setup Assistant.

  5. From the panel, select Get started.

  6. From the dialog box, select Create property.

  7. On the screen asking how to set up a Google tag, select Install a Google tag and select Next.

  8. Select Install manually and then select Done.

You have now migrated your UA property to a GA4 property.

Create custom dimensions

Custom dimensions are used in the Workplace product to collect anonymized app usage information used to improve the Workplace product. This information is not shared with any third parties, as stated in the privacy policy accompanying your Squiz Workplace contract.

As part of a GA4 migration, you must set up custom dimensions that your Workplace instance can use to track app usage statistics.

  1. Load the Google Analytics dashboard.

  2. Select system configuration to open the Admin options.

  3. Select Custom definitions.

  4. Select Create custom dimensions.

  5. Enter the following details to create the first custom dimension:

    Dimension Name

    eventAction

    Event Parameter

    eventAction

    Scope

    event

  6. Select Save.

  7. Repeat the same steps to add the second custom dimension details:

    Dimension Name

    eventCategory

    Event Parameter

    eventCategory

    Scope

    event

  8. Repeat the same steps once more to add the third and final custom dimension details:

    Dimension Name

    eventLabel

    Event Parameter

    eventLabel

    Scope

    event

You have now configured the custom dimension settings required to track usage statistics.
