Troubleshooting Windows update scheduling

Background

This article details some common errors that may occur when attempting to schedule updates using Windows.

Scheduling of updates on Windows uses the Windows Task Scheduler.

Windows has various group policy / permission requirements for users relating the the scheduling of tasks.

These are configured with the local or domain security policies which are configured from administrative tools within the system control panel.

Credentials are not permitted to be stored for the user

Problem: The following error message is displayed when attempting to schedule a task if the user does not have Network access: Do not allow storage of passwords and credentials for network authentication set to disabled on the server.

ERROR: A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated

Resolution: Grant the necessary permission and reboot the server.

The user does not have batch job logon rights

Problem: The following error message is displayed when attempting to schedule a task if the user does not have the Log on as a batch job privilege on the server.

WARNING: The task is registered, but may fail to start. Batch logon privilege needs to be enabled for the task principal.

Resolution: Grant the necessary permission and reboot the server.
